“Let My People Go” – Visit the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, Cincinnati, Ohio

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

The words from this old Negro Spiritual never were more real than when I recently visited the new National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. This state of the art museum chronicles the development of the National Underground Railroad that formed a network of safe houses and the heroic conductors who risked life and family to assist slaves in their journeys to freedom. Even more heroic were the men, women, and children who were willing to die to escape the tyranny of slavery.

The stories are told through modern technology, historic displays, and interactive venues. In several of the interactive video displays you are asked to make decisions that, if wrong, end your dream of freedom and perhaps your life. Oprah Winfrey, in one of the movies created for the Center, tells the magnificent story of the heroism found in early Ripley, Ohio. As a person who really does not enjoy museums, I was shocked to see that I had spent over 2 1/2 hours there. (The joke in the family is that I can tour one of the Smithsonian wings in 30 minutes or less.)

A visit to the Freedom Center is much more than developing awareness of American history and factors that led to the Civil War and the abolition of slavery. It causes one to look inward and to reexamine the traditional history taught in many American schools. You are aghast that churches, Congress, the Supreme Court, and over half the nation believed that slavery was not only profitable but ordained by God. Regrettably, you also realize that similar arguments are used today to oppress and enslave in different ways. As you leave, you have a far better understanding of the spiritual “Let my people go…”

To learn more about this fascinating museum, visit its web site at http://www.freedomcenter.org. Specific driving directions are also provided.

Polyphonic Ringtones – A Useful Babysitting Aid?

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Polyphonic ringtones have turned cell phones from an ordinary communication tool into a multi functional device with a variety of purposesone of which is entertaining bored children.

As a father of an active toddler, I often find myself in situations where my child is a) about to break something very expensive, b) screaming in a public place. The most obvious solution, of course, would be to give him a toy to keep him amused. But as any parent knows, toys do not work when they are supposed to. They will be flung to the floor (or worse, at the strangers sitting at the next table). In emergency situations like that, I bring out my phone.

There’s something about the polyphonic ringtones that provide a hypnotic, calming effect on small children. They listen to it, over and over again. My son’s favourite, the end credit theme of Sponge Bob, has been known to keep him seated in one place for five minutes. For an 18 month old, that’s nothing short of a miracle.

For that reason, I always keep a number of polyphonic tones that my son might like. The Barney Songthe anthem of all toddlers and their unfortunate parentsis armed and ready whenever we enter a restaurant. There is also, for some mysterious reason, Brian McKnight’s “One Last Cry.” I don’t know why he likes it, or even when he first heard it, but we use it whenever he goes to the paediatrician and needs to stay still for a shot. (For those who will accuse me of not raising my child properly by exposing him to cheesy ballads, I defend myself by saying that he also likes The Beatles and John Coltrane.) Yes, even the most modern songs have been converted into polyphonic tunes. Of course the classics are theremy wife’s “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies” sounds particularly fairy-like in its polyphonic form. Download whatever you like. Or whatever your child likes, even if you hate it, because we all know he’s the boss.

I have a theory that the reason children like polyphonic tones is that it has that music box quality: delicate, tinkling rhythms. Though deeper and less metallic than the blips of music boxes of old, it still sounds equally as magical to the innocent ears of a child. And, of course, there is the advantage that polyphonic tunes are now more diverse than the standard music box themes of Fur Elise, and I do not have to deal with a pink ballerina. (Barney is bad enough.)

Who would’ve thought that a mobile phone could be such a useful babysitting aid, or that polyphonic ring tones would rank as high as disposable diapers in the parents’ list of modern inventions to be thankful for. While it does have a lot of uses in the adult worldwith everyone in the room carrying a mobile phone, having a unique ring tone lets you know when it’s your callits greatest contribution to society is the peace it provides frazzled parents. Yes, music does have the power to soothe the “savage beasts”.

When Creative Inspiration is Lost

Monday, July 7th, 2008

We all need inspiration at some time or other. Even the most avid photographer can enter times where the normal creative spark is simply not there. When this happens, photography can border on the routine and mundane. This is often reflected in the images that are produces which will often be less in number and poorer in content.

If you can recognise the fact that you will pass through this stage at some point in your development then you are half way to conquering the problem. The simple realisation that most photographers, even professionals, have to deal with the same issues, should help prepare you and see you through to that time that getting the intended image is almost second nature.

Why sudden lapses in creativity happen, nobody truly knows. And it is certainly not restricted to photography. Most walks of life, that demand inner resources and inspirational urges, are associated with often mind-numbing lows. You can consider it to be the equivalent to writer’s block, and it will, yes will, pass.

What can be done to help you through the more difficult time? Firstly, if the spark is not there, accept it. Go and do something else. Spend time with your friends or family, take a vacation, read a book or do some DIY. Anything but focus on your photography. Nothing is worse that riding a creative lapse only to be further depressed by the substandard work you feel you are producing.

Secondly, talk to someone about it; anyone – friends, family, online chat, discussion forums. You will inevitably meet reflected feedback that will support you through this and quite probably find that others have the same issues from time to time in their own areas of interest.

You developed your hobby for a reason. That reason has spurred you on up until now. The depth and strength of your former passion will resurface because, quite likely, photography is in your blood. Let it shine through when it wants. Once again it will fulfil you. When it does, be ready to help others through the same difficulties.

Compost Tea – Tea Time For Your Garden

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

If you would like a nice garden, you’ll need a bucket of water and some garbage. That simple recipe is all you need to grow healthy, beautiful plants all summer long. But before you start floating a tin can in a some water, you need to know that there is a catch. The trick to this recipe is that you have to compost your garbage first. Compost and water are the only ingredients you need to create a powerful plant supplement known as compost tea.

Compost in the garden will improve your soil which in turn will reward you with strong plants that are better able to fend off droughts and diseases. Compost improves soil structure and drainage. It can also be used as a fertilizer or a mulch and it enhances the soil’s ability to absorb water.

Compost tea provides the same benefits to a plant as compost but it doesn’t stop there. Not only can compost tea can applied to the soil around plants like regular compost, but it can also be sprayed on the leaves. When sprayed directly on the leaves, it increases the amount of nutrients available to the plant and helps fight foliar diseases. It will even increase the nutritional value and improve the taste of vegetables.

There are many different ways to make compost tea but most recipes can be summarized by saying, if you steep compost in water you get compost tea.

Using rain water is the best way to make compost tea but you can get by with tap water if rain is scarce. Tap water usually contains enough chlorine in it to kill off all of the beneficial bacteria so it’s best to let it sit for a few hours before using it.

The quickest and easiest way to make compost tea is with an old sock filled with compost. Throw it in a bucket and let it sit for a day and you’ve just made compost tea. Sure there are more complicated ways to make the tea more effective such as using air stones or fish tank bubblers to feed the mixture enough oxygen but the old sock in a bucket method works just fine. Some people add molasses to the mix and there are many other secret home recipes. But you’ll do fine by using a sock filled with compost and a bucket of water. And actually the sock is optional if you have no plans on using a sprayer.

When applying compost tea with a sprayer you have to worry about clogs. Attach some cheese cloth or a piece of panty hose to the sprayer’s intake with some rubber bands and you should be fine.

If you need more than a few buckets of tea, then an old fish tank or a plastic storage bin would make a great container for brewing compost tea.

After you’ve brewed a few batches and are happy with the results why not try aerated compost tea? You’ll need to feed your mixture a constant supply of oxygen so a bubbler or air stones will be required. You need to keep it aerated so it doesn’t grow any harmful pathogens. Some popular ingredients to add to bubbling compost tea are alfalfa, fish emulsion, powdered seaweed, corn meal, green sand and more. Don’t use manure. Manure tea shouldn’t be used as a foliar spray especially if you’re growing vegetables and who wants manure floating around in their bucket anyway.

Ask a weekend gardener about compost and chances are they’ll tell you it’s powerful stuff with a lot of uses. But ask a serious gardener about compost and they’ll probably tell you that it’s the most important ingredient there is when making compost tea.

Groupware Proves to Be a Versatile Employee

Groupware

Groupware is a software or hardware that manages documents on which organizations and groups collaborate. Groupware, of some form or another, has become a much sought after technology among businesses. Each groupware package includes tools which are meant to meet the needs of a business. Don’t be alarmed that when your business begins its search for a groupware package that 5,590,000 indexed pages will greet you on Google, 3,820,000 on Yahoo, and 950,316 on MSN. The fact is the market knows that your business needs a groupware package.

In today’s Information Age, business collaboration is only harnessed by the speed and efficiency of its technology. Businesses, large and small, maintain some sort of groupware technology in order to manage document sharing quickly and efficiently. Since groupware is meant to manage documents on which organizations and groups collaborate, the groupware package you choose must be able to work the way your business does.

Thomas Edison once said, “There ain’t no rules around here. We’re just trying to accomplish something.” Whether we like it or not, this is the case in much, if not most, of business collaboration. In other words, the ideal collaboration process would be organized into a regular process, and records of drafts would be stored in files in a way that you would always know where they are. But, the real collaboration process generally involves an ad hoc process of emails whirling back and forth in a cyclone of copies and drafts, saved across multiple email accounts and hard drives. When deadlines draw near and it’s time to merge the changes, it is almost impossible to organize drafts and records in order to have an accurate point of reference.

A Versatile Employee

When deadlines come due, the versatile survive. Businesses need a document manager that can handle the ad hoc jumble that accompanies document collaboration and groupware. Digital Thread technology has stepped up to the challenge and proven itself to be one of your most versatile employees.

Since documents are saved across multiple emails and hard drives by multiple users, businesses need groupware that tracks documents across multiple emails and hard drives and works with multiple users. Groupware with Digital Thread technology is able to do that. Digital Thread also creates digital signatures each time an email is opened with a new draft attached, telling you where it is saved and when the last set of changes were made. When it comes to bringing everything together in the end, Digital Thread creates a version history flow chart and displays merging options.

There is a way to sift through the millions of groupware packages available, and to find technology that works for your business. Because businesses need to manage the ad hoc nature of document collaboration, they need to search for a content management tool, or groupware that is built specifically for ad hoc document management.
