The Alternative to Book Tours

Friday, November 28th, 2008

The reason an author does a book tour is for publicity. When an author visits a city, the publisher is hoping that a newspaper will feature the book – since the book signing is a local event. Unfortunately, if an author self-publishes, the book tour expenses fall on the author. Most authors cannot afford that expense. If you’re one of those authors, there is an alternative.

It’s an online tour. You can tour online using blogs.

1. You can start a blog to give Internet users a preview of your book. You should also get a website to promote your book. (There are many free web-hosting companies out there, if you’re unable to pay for one.) Make sure you put a link to your website on your blog.

2. Find blogs that have readers that would be interested in your book. Contact the blog administrators to see if they would be interested in featuring your book on their blog.

3. Find websites that offer free book promotion.

You can promote your book on our website, too; www.forthewriter.com – go to Featured Books.

Making a BMX Writer out of you

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

So you would like to write BMX articles. Maybe you want to write a scene report, a contest, a recent roadtrip, a product review or any other BMX related topics. Your ultimate goal is to be published in an e-zine or a BMX magazine. I listed some ideas below that may help you get started.

The first thing to do is make an outline of the article you want to write. This will help you stay on track when you are writing the article. This will also keep you from rambling off and losing your reader. Below is the outline for this article that I prepared.

Title; Making a BMX Writer out of you.

 Introduction
Create Outline
Writing for the reading audience this article is intended.
Length of article.
Submitting pictures for the article.
Proofing the article after it is written.
What to do with the article after it is done.

When you are writing an article you must take into consideration who the intended readers will be. If you are writing for a general audience such as a newspaper article it doesn’t make any sense to talk about doing tailwhips to manual or maybe a toothpick on a subbox. Instead you would say the BMX rider is performing a bike trick on the ramp. If you are writing a scene report for a BMX rider reader you would not bore them to death saying the rider was doing a BMX bike trick. Something better would be “he was out of control whipping out tailwhips to icepicks on the spine”.

Write an article to lengthy and you will probably lose you reader before he or she is done with it. I never write articles over 500 words. This article has 470 words. If you have a long article you should find sentences that could be taken out.

Generally when I submit pictures I send them by e-mail as .jpg extension files and I also send a clear hard copy (photo paper) to the editor. I also mention who took the picture and who is in the picture.

After finishing your article read it and make sure all the words are spelled correctly and you have used proper grammar. Also make sure the article flows and makes sense. After doing that have at least one other person that is good in the subject of English proof it also. Even better have another person proof your work. Sometimes if it is an important article I will have a third person read it.

You can submit it to Evilbmx. The editors will look at it and decide if they will work it in the next e-zine. There is also many article directories you can submit it to on the web. Some of the directories are:

Keep in Mind When Submitting Free Articles

Monday, November 24th, 2008

When you submit your article to free article databases, your article could end up on any website. It could land as few as 5 websites to as many as 200+. Sounds great for exposure but there is a down side. Websites that may have nothing to do with your article’s subject may post your article. Why? The more new content added to a website, the more a search engine will crawl it. That means more exposure for the website and possibly for you. For some, it doesn’t matter because the more places online the better. Just be careful because you may end up on a website you don’t find appropriate for your subject or for yourself to be on.

What Your Mechanic Doesn't Want You to Know

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Reader Question: My car shakes and vibrates on the freeway, does this mean I need a front end alignment?

Dear concerned car owner,

How do you know if your car needs a front end alignment? Vibrations, shimmy, and shaking felt in the steering wheel are usually not a sign of needing a front end alignment. A front end alignment, or four wheel alignment as it is commonly referred to these days due to the fact that the rear end of the vehicle can also be adjusted, does just what the name implies align, or line up the direction of the wheels so the vehicle is pointed in a straight line.

Caster, camber, and toe are terms used to describe the direction of the wheel in relation to the body of the vehicle. The front of the tire can be pointed in toward the center of the vehicle thus “toed in.” When the front of the tire is pointed outward, it is referred to as “toed out.” Both of these problems can quickly wear down the tread of a tire and can cause a “pull” in one direction of the front end. The top of the wheel can also lean in toward the center of the vehicle or lean out away from the vehicle, causing a camber problem. This situation can also cause tire wear and a pull to one direction in the front end. Caster measures the relationship of the left and right wheels to each other. If one wheel is farther forward or back from the other wheel, then there is a caster problem. Caster will usually not cause a pull or tire wear, and this problem is commonly found on wrecked vehicles.

So what causes shimmy and shakes in the front end? The biggest culprit is an out-of-balance or out-of-round tire. As the tread on the tire wears, it will need to be re-balanced to evenly distribute the weight of the tire and the wheel. To do this, small lead weight is attached to the outside of the wheel and a machine is used to spin the tire and wheel to check balance. Tires should be balanced and rotated every 12,000 miles (approximately every four oil changes) to ensure even tire wear and extend tread life. Out-of-round means the tire has worn unevenly and cannot be balanced. An out-of-round tire will have to be replaced. I have even seen new tires that were out-of-round due to a manufacturing defect.

Hitting a curb or large pot hole can cause the wheel weights to come off, and sometimes the weights sling off the wheel at high speed if they were not installed properly. Out-of-round or out-of-balance will not cause a pull in the front end, but will definitely cause shakes and shimmies. If you can drive out of a shake or shimmy by varying the speed of the car, it is a good clue that you have an out-of-balance problem. A simple way to check tire balance: if the shimmy is present at one speed, but better or not present at a different speed, then a balance problem is likely. An out-of-round tire or a bent wheel will usually produce a wobble or shimmy at all speeds, and replacement of the tire or wheel is usually the cure.

Regular tire rotation is the best way to extend the life of a tire. Ask your mechanic which way to rotate the tires depending on how the tread is wearing. Crossing tires in an “X” pattern is usually the standard way to rotate most tires, but moving the front tires to the back in some cases is recommended to place the best tires on the front. The majority of the stopping power of the vehicle comes from the front brakes, so the best tires should stay on the front for safety. Caution: Some tires are “directional” and must stay on one side of the vehicle, due to the fact that the tire was made for the tread to only travel in one direction.

A vibration or shaking that is felt in the steering wheel only when the brakes are applied is not a front end alignment problem, but a brake problem. Have the brakes inspected and make sure to tell your mechanic about the shaking that you feel in the steering wheel when you apply the brakes. This vibration may not be felt by the mechanic on a quick test drive around the block, so be specific. During this brake inspection, it would also be a great time to rotate the tires since you are already paying the labor to remove the wheels.

I have developed a quick and easy to use maintenance schedule that can help keep you up-to-date on the items mentioned above. These schedules are free for you to view and print out

HOW DABBLER WRITERS BECOME PROFESSIONALS

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

They do it regularly: with self discipline and dedication.

I may not be one of the best writers around, but I’ve got
dedication and self discipline (which comes from motivation,
because I love what I do – although it’s very hard work).
I try to have fun, whilst I try to earn a living.

Top writers WRITE AND REWRITE – many times over, so the
words flow better each time.

They aim for perfection – very, very hard to achieve; although
one can always improve.

Every time I go through a manuscript, I change things (like
repetitive words, incorrect grammar and punctuation) to try to
get the words to flow better… but one has to draw a halt
somewhere, otherwise my books would never get published.

*

HOW TO AVOID COMMON MISTAKES
What do you think are the most common mistakes
of new writers?

Take a coffee break while you do this short
assignment.

My immediate thoughts:

repetitive words

incorrect grammar

incorrect punctuation

using too many words

The art of good writing, I believe lies in brevity, so omit all
unnecessary words.

It makes the sentence flow more rhythmically, more swiftly.
I find reading a very cerebral (impressive word) activity, that
demands a lot of concentration- so make a conscious effort to
write in a style that’s easy to read . Try to make your reading
so easy on the eye, that a child can enjoy (and appreciate) your
writing style.

Now you have all the tools and the talent there should not be
anything to stop you indulging in your creative pursuits. I hope
this information may be helpful to you in your creative writing

“If a man has talent and cannot use it, he has failed. If he has
a talent and uses only half of it, he has partly failed. If he has a
talent and learns somehow to use the whole of it, he has gloriously
succeeded and has a satisfaction and a triumph few men ever know.”
— Thomas Wolfe

“Everyone has a talent. What is rare is the courage to
follow the talent to the dark place where it leads.”
— Erica Jong

Dreamland

My eyes are squinting

as tears fall on my face..

The inages of my haven is now blurred

Swirling around me so fast

I couldn’t help but stumble

and indulge in my comfort zone

I struggle between consciousness and unconsciousness

as the darkness continuously tempts me

towards a world where pain is never known

and my whole being, rested

preparing for another journey, another walk

but then an image appeared vaguely on my senses

and the darkness was dominated

slowly the image became vivid

I saw a familiar face

someone I see everyday

Someone I loathed for ruining my dream

I rose from my bed, grabbed my green notebook

and started doing my TLE homework

About the Author: The author was so sleepy and was tempted to finally doze off to sleep but then the image of her teacher appeared and she remebered she had to accomplish her homework or tomorrow she’d be dead.
